    Materials and Tools Needed

Before you begin, gather the following materials and tools:

    • Parquet flooring tiles or planks
    • Underlayment (if required)
    • Adhesive (recommended for glue-down installations)
    • Trowel
    • Measuring tape
    • Chalk line
    • Utility knife
    • Jigsaw (if cutting tiles)
    • Rubber mallet
    • Spacers
    • Level
    • Safety goggles and knee pads

    Step 1: Prepare the Subfloor

The key to a successful installation lies in the preparation of the subfloor. Ensure it is clean, dry, and level. Remove any old flooring, and repair any damage. Use a level to check for uneven areas, and fill in low spots with leveling compound if necessary. Allow the subfloor to dry completely if you used any moisture control products.

Step 2: Acclimate the Parquet Flooring

Allow your parquet flooring to acclimate to the room’s temperature and humidity for at least 48 hours before installation. This will help prevent any warping or shrinking after installation.

    Step 3: Plan Your Layout

Before you begin installing, plan your layout. Choose a starting point, often a straight wall or a room’s center, depending on your room’s shape. Use a chalk line to mark the starting line, ensuring it is straight and level.

Step 4: Install the Underlayment (if necessary)

If your parquet flooring requires an underlayment, roll it out over the entire area. This layer helps with sound insulation and moisture protection. Overlap the seams according to the manufacturer’s instructions and secure it with tape.

    Step 5: Apply Adhesive

For glue-down parquet flooring, apply the adhesive to the subfloor using a trowel. Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations regarding adhesive type and application methods. Work in small sections to prevent the adhesive from drying out before you place the tiles.

Step 6: Lay the Parquet Tiles

Start placing the parquet tiles along the chalk line. Press each tile firmly into the adhesive, ensuring there are no gaps between them. Use spacers along the edges to maintain an expansion gap, allowing for natural movement of the flooring.

Continue laying tiles row by row, cutting tiles as necessary to fit around edges or obstacles. A jigsaw works well for making precise cuts. Check each row for levelness as you go, tapping tiles into place with a rubber mallet if needed.

Step 7: Allow the Adhesive to Cure

After completing the installation, allow the adhesive to cure as per the manufacturer’s instructions. This usually requires a few hours, but it’s best to wait at least 24 hours before walking on the new floor.

    Step 8: Finish the Edges

Once the adhesive has cured, remove spacers and install baseboards or quarter-round molding to cover the expansion gap. This adds a polished look to your new flooring and protects edges from damage.

    Step 9: Clean Up

Finally, clean the new floor to remove any excess adhesive or debris. Follow the care instructions provided by the flooring manufacturer for cleaning and maintenance.

    Conclusion

Installing parquet flooring can be a rewarding DIY project. By following these steps and taking your time, you can achieve a beautiful, professional-looking floor. Enjoy the transformation and the enhanced character it brings to your space!
